Barcelona Style Stool

The Barcelona Style Stool embraces Mies van der Rohe's famous quote 'less is more'. Whether accompanying the Barcelona Style Chair or standing alone, the stool has a simple elegance that brings an air of luxury to any room. Superiorly crafted, the stool features hand-sewn leather panels punctuated by buttons. The polished chrome base adds extra distinction, bringing an artistic flair to the stool. Ideal as a footrest to the Barcelona Chair, the stool can also be used as a comfy seat or unique side stool for books or magazines. Upholstered in Italian leather, which will improve with age, the stool is available in black, dark brown, brown, sand, camel, red, cream and white. Also in this range are the Barcelona Style Chair, Barcelona Style Table, Barcelona Style 2-Seater Sofa, Barcelona Style Daybed, Barcelona Style 2-Seater Bench and Barcelona Style 3-Seater Bench.

The story behind the Barcelona Style Stool

Designed as an accompaniment for his Barcelona Chair, the stool and chair set have the famous honour of being made for royalty. Created to seat the King and Queen of Spain at the 1929 World Exhibition, the Barcelona design is inspired by modernist and classical influences. Its style complemented the German Pavilion at the 1929 World Exhibition in Barcelona, also designed Mies van der Rohe. This building was strikingly modern with a geometry that is echoed in the Barcelona collection. The curved, crossing base, however, can be attributed to influences from ancient Egyptian folding stools and nineteenth-century neoclassical seating.

1886 (Germany) -1969 (United States)

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a German-American architect and is regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of architecture. His ‘less-is-more’ approach to design became the gold standard for many generations of modern architecture. The simple forms and extravagant materials Mies van der Rohe used to design the Barcelona Pavilion have inspired many modern minimalist buildings including Capel Manor in Kent, England.
