About the Pelican Table

The sculptural form of the Finn Juhl Pelican Table is a stunning example of the designer's skill and commitment to carpentry. What makes Juhl stand out from his contemporaries is his attention to detail. The straight, short legs with rounded ends, the raised lip on the circumference of the table and the precise proportions, are the intricate complexities we expect from Finn Juhl. No other Scandinavian designer manages to incorporate such excitement and innovation into a design that, on the surface, remains so humble and rustic. This is another classic Scandinavian design that will never go out of fashion.

The story behind the Finn Juhl Pelican Table

The Finn Juhl Pelican table was first unveiled at the annual Copenhagen Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibition in 1940 and very soon after its debut it entered into production. It has remained popular ever since. It was originally designed to complement the Pelican Armchair, but since its development has taken on a life of its own. The table demonstrates how Juhl combined a love of traditional Scandinavian woodwork practices and a relentless desire to innovate and embrace new technology. High-quality wood is central to Juhl's approach to design, so we took the same care with our VOGA reproduction. Finn Juhl's iconic designs also include The Poet Sofa and the No. 45 Chair

About the Designer

Finn Juhl

1912-1989 (Denmark)

Finn Juhl was the first Danish furniture designer to receive international recognition. He studied architecture with a Danish architect, Vilhelm Lauritzen and graduated from the Royal Academy in Copenhagen. As a furniture designer he was self-taught, something that he always emphasized. Juhl designed his first piece of furniture in the late 1930s. Mainly pieces for himself but after setting up his own office in 1945 he soon became known for creating unusual, expressive and sculptural pieces of furniture. He had a collaboration with master cabinet maker Niels Vodder and managed to cause a stir with designs obviously inspired by modern, abstract art. Compared to his contemporaries, Juhl put more energy into the form and less on function, which presented a break in traditional design.

"One cannot create happiness with beautiful objects, but one can spoil quite a lot of happiness with bad ones."
