Eileen Gray Wendingen Rug

Moving between the various approaches that influenced her work, Eileen Gray's Wendingen Rug unites these strands with her own unique geometric forms. The contrast between cream and bold red makes a versatile colour combination for any stylish décor and the clean parallel lines of the composition can be used to effectively unify a lounge or living room. In fact, Gray's measured attitude to balancing space and colour is so perfect in Wendingen, it's difficult to imagine an interior that wouldn't be refreshed by her iconic shapes. The VOGA.com reproduction uses Gray's specifications for wool to create something long-lasting but delicate to the touch.

The story behind the Eileen Gray Wendingen Rug

Following from the other pieces of highly personal textile art in this series, Eileen's Gray's Wendingen refers to the Dutch art and design magazine that first published her work. The monthly publication was crucial in helping Gray overcome the restrictions on female architects and designers of the period. Although Gray's rug is arguably now more recognized than the magazine itself, between 1918 and 1932 the magazine's discussion of architecture and interior design was extremely influential. Wendingen translates as 'upheaval'and Gray's rug pays its respects to the magazine as well as representing its spirit of change and disruption.

About the Designer

Eileen Gray

1878 (Ireland) -1976 (France)

Irish born, Kathleen Eileen Moray Gray was a furniture designer, architect and pioneer of the modern movement. Considering the era she lived in, this was a quite an accomplishment for a woman in a very male dominated industry. Gray was a great admirer of Charles Le Corbusier and his influences can be seen in her self-built French summerhouse, which was also named E1027.
