  • High-quality and hard-wearing wool replica

For the Castellar Rug Eileen Gray returned to the warmer and more direct colours of earlier designs. Her shapes often balance distinctive colours and the anonymity of geometric figures and with Castellar the composition is abstract yet precise; designed to act in parallel with a space, but with enough rule-breaking to remain exciting. It balances textile art and high-end manufacture, drawing on Gray's varied design and artistic skills. Just as the Castellar sunlight brightens the entire region, our meticulous VOGA.com production is intended to provide light and glow to an any thoughtful decor.

The story behind the Eileen Gray Castellar Rug

Overcoming the obstacles facing women working in design and architecture in the early twentieth century, Gray had success with a series of rugs inspired by site-specific designs. Castellar refers to the second house she was involved with designing in southeastern France. In her own methodical style it captures the brightness and joy she found in the region. It is highly personal and intimate, but Gray was not concerned with one-off pieces. She was interested in the possibilities of manufacture, reproduction and selling multiples from her Gallery, opposite the Salle Pleyel concert hall in Paris.

About the Designer

Eileen Gray

1878 (Ireland) -1976 (France)

Irish born, Kathleen Eileen Moray Gray was a furniture designer, architect and pioneer of the modern movement. Considering the era she lived in, this was a quite an accomplishment for a woman in a very male dominated industry. Gray was a great admirer of Charles Le Corbusier and his influences can be seen in her self-built French summerhouse, which was also named E1027.
