Arne Jacobsen
1902-1971
First labelled as the greatest insult to British architecture when he was commissioned to design a new college for Oxford University, Arne Jacobsen is now considered one of the 20th century’s most influential designers and architects. Jacobsen’s distinctive chair designs the 1952 Ant chair and the 1955 Series 7 chair have become furniture must-haves for anyone serious enough to show off their designer taste. In 1958, he was commissioned to design the entire Royal Hotel building in Copenhagen – it was also the place where both the iconic Egg and Swan chairs were given their debut in the hotel’s lobby and reception.
Arne Jacobsen’s vision: to create industrially manufactured furniture in the same quality as handcrafted furniture.
